About the Role
Grafana Labs is a remote-first, open-source powerhouse. There are more than 20M users of Grafana, the open source visualization tool, around the globe, monitoring everything from beehives to climate change in the Alps. The instantly recognizable dashboards have been spotted everywhere from a NASA launch and Minecraft HQ to Wimbledon and the Tour de France. Grafana Labs also helps more than 3,000 companies -- including Bloomberg, JPMorgan Chase, and eBay -- manage their observability strategies with the Grafana LGTM Stack, which can be run fully managed with Grafana Cloud or self-managed with the Grafana Enterprise Stack, both featuring scalable metrics (Grafana Mimir), logs (Grafana Loki), and traces (Grafana Tempo).
We're scaling fast and staying true to what makes us different: an open-source legacy, a global collaborative culture, and a passion for meaningful work. Our team thrives in an innovation-driven environment where transparency, autonomy, and trust fuel everything we do.
You may not meet every requirement, and that's okay. If this role excites you, we'd love you to raise your hand for what could be a truly career-defining opportunity.
Engineering Manager - Mimir
This is a remote position. We are considering candidates in Germany, Sweden, Spain, Ireland and the UK only.
The Opportunity:
Grafana Cloud is our composable observability platform that integrates metrics, logs, traces, and profiles with Grafana. It allows our customers to leverage the best open source observability software – including Prometheus, Mimir, Loki, Tempo, and Pyroscope – without the overhead of installing, maintaining and scaling their own observability stack.
The Databases department owns and operates the telemetry databases that are Mimir for metrics, Loki for logs, Tempo for traces, and Pyroscope for profiles. We offer our databases as a service within Grafana Cloud.
The Metrics group, part of the Databases department, has the mission of ensuring that we provide the most-scalable, efficient and easy-to-use metrics database. Under that mission, the Metrics group is responsible for the development of Grafana Cloud Metrics, Mimir OSS, and Grafana Enterprise Metrics. We are also heavily involved in the Prometheus and Open Telemetry open source projects.
Mimir is a Cloud-native database, built in Go, delivered as microservices, and with data stored in object storage that powers metrics observability at scale. This multi-tenant distributed system is implemented in Go and we operate it at scale on Kubernetes across all major Cloud service providers (AWS, GCP, Azure).
The Mimir squad has 3 sub-squads: Ingest, Storage, and Query. Together, we develop the Mimir OSS project and operate Grafana Cloud Metrics. Engineers on the team focus on optimizing the efficiency and resilience of processing, storing, and querying metrics at large volumes. These services operate at a large scale and performance is key to keeping the offering competitive and running smoothly.
We are looking for an Engineering Manager to help us grow and develop our Databases Metrics teams. Our managers take an active role in creating a productive environment for our engineers; be it through removing blockers and impediments, facilitating cross-team collaboration and understanding, or by aiding the team in helping themselves by constantly improving and refining their working practices. You'll be responsible for managing a team of engineers working on our Metrics products and helping them to perform at their best.
What You'll Be Doing:
• The core focus of the role is people management, but you should have enough technical skills to manage a highly technical team and product.
• Manage, hire, and develop a team of engineers, providing regular feedback and supporting each person's growth through career conversations.
• You will act as project manager as well as working with product owners to ensure the product roadmap is defined and up-to-date
• You have a strong technical background and are capable of engaging in technical conversations and challenging teams to arrive at strong technical decisions themselves
• You will be comfortable working with engineering teams who have a strong sense of autonomy in their decision making, be it technical or product focussed
• Interacting with customers will occasionally occur, most of our customers are large companies using Mimir to monitor their operations
• While you're great with people and adept at managing relationships, you still keep up-to-date with the latest technical trends and shifts in order to maintain and enhance your understanding of the challenges your teams face.
• Ideally you will have a Computer Science degree or equivalent experience from having worked as an engineer before moving into Management.
• We develop in Go, we are Cloud Native and deploy on Kubernetes across all Cloud Service Providers using Helm and Jsonnet. Conceptual familiarity with Kubernetes and Helm is valuable, knowledge arou
