Founding Software Engineer

Job title: Founding Software Engineer Job type: Perm Salary: $150,000–$180,000 base salary + equity Role Location: Jersey City, NJ — Hybrid The Company Our client is an early-stage technology company using AI to solve one of the biggest information problems facing infrastructure development. Their platform brings together regulations, technical standards, permitting requirements and agency guidance from thousands of sources, using AI to make complex regulatory information searchable, structured, explainable and actionable. This is a founding engineering opportunity where you'll work directly with the founders and have significant influence over the technical direction, architecture and product. Role And Responsibilities • Design and build the backend architecture for a complex AI-powered regulatory intelligence platform. • Build pipelines that discover, ingest, classify and monitor regulatory changes across federal, state and local governments. • Develop structured permitting workflows that translate regulations into clear requirements, decision points and permit pathways. • Build AI and LLM-powered workflows that extract structured, explainable knowledge from complex regulatory documents. • Design APIs and services connecting regulatory intelligence with mapping and workflow products. • Build systems capable of processing large-scale geospatial and regulatory datasets efficiently. • Develop search, retrieval and knowledge representation systems. • Make key architecture and technology decisions across the platform. Job Requirements • 4+ years of software engineering experience with significant ownership of production systems. • Strong experience designing and building search systems. • Experience working with GraphQL and REST APIs. • Experience building AI agents, agentic workflows or LLM-powered automation systems using technologies such as LangGraph, LangChain, CrewAI, OpenAI Assistants/Responses API or similar. • Strong Python development experience and experience with modern Python frameworks. • Strong experience with PostgreSQL and relational databases. • Comfortable working with large datasets. Nice To Have • Experience with spatial indexing, GIS or mapping frameworks. • Experience within infrastructure, energy, environmental permitting, utilities or regulatory technology. • Previous experience at a high-growth startup or on a founding engineering team. • Experience building 0-to-1 products and taking systems from concept through to production.
