About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled Lead AI/ML Engineer to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will take full ownership of designing, developing, and deploying AI and machine learning solutions that are embedded directly into clinical workflows such as Utilization Management and Care Management. Your work will directly impact patient care by automating administrative tasks, providing decision support, and enhancing workflow efficiency for clinicians, nurses, and care managers. This is a hands-on, impactful position that requires collaboration with cross-functional teams including clinical leaders, business stakeholders, and operations personnel. You will influence the technical direction of our AI initiatives, mentor junior engineers, and ensure responsible deployment within a regulated healthcare environment. The role offers flexibility to work remotely within the United States and provides an exciting opportunity to use AI to solve real-world clinical challenges, ultimately improving patient outcomes and clinician experiences. Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent professional experience (minimum 4 years) • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including full-stack development • 4+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud-native deployment models • 4+ years of experience with Next.js, React, TypeScript, and modern frontend architectures • 4+ years of backend development experience with Node.js or equivalent frameworks • 4+ years of experience working with PostgreSQL or other relational databases • 4+ years of experience deploying and managing applications on Microsoft Azure • 2+ years of experience integrating AI/LLMs into applications, including prompt engineering, orchestration, and API integration • 2+ years of experience working with RESTful APIs, authentication, authorization, and secure application design Responsibilities • Design, develop, and maintain full-stack applications utilizing Next.js, React, and TypeScript • Build and integrate large language model (LLM) powered features such as summarization, search, decision support, and virtual assistants • Design scalable, reliable, and secure backend services and APIs to support clinical workflows • Develop and optimize data models and queries using PostgreSQL, ensuring high performance and data integrity • Deploy, monitor, and operate applications on Microsoft Azure cloud platform, leveraging services such as App Services, Containers, Functions, and AI tools • Implement best practices for cloud architecture, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD), observability, and cost management • Collaborate with system architects and AI engineers to design system capabilities and integrate AI models effectively • Write clean, well-documented, and testable code, leading by example in code reviews and technical standards • Mentor junior engineers, fostering technical growth and knowledge sharing within the team • Contribute to technical decision-making processes and help shape the future direction of AI solutions within the organization Benefits • Competitive salary ranging from $112,700 to $193,200 annually, based on experience and qualifications • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance • Incentive and recognition programs to reward performance • Equity stock purchase options and 401(k) retirement plan • Flexible remote work environment within the United States • Opportunities for professional development and career growth • Supportive and inclusive workplace culture committed to diversity and equity Equal Opportunity UnitedHealth Group is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer.
