About the Role
Full Job Description Our team cares deeply about helping patients, and we're looking for someone invigorated by that too. Since 2015, Healthvana has helped millions of people, and our work has been featured at the White House (where we presented our AI work), on Capitol Hill, and at Stanford University, published in medical journals, and covered in media ranging from the NY Times to Fox News.
We're on a mission to help end HIV, and we're a leader in doing so in the United States. Our platform helps patients engage in their healthcare either via partner healthcare providers in-person or via telehealth. Through our telehealth One-for-One program, every new insured patient means we help an uninsured person get access to free care. We launched this less than a year ago and are already helping patients in 50 states!
Our care ecosystem spans digital patient intake, a patient portal, a provider portal, telehealth communications, prescription ordering and management, and more – and we use AI tools throughout our care delivery, from conversational AI that helps patients stay on track to the coding tools our engineering team uses every day.
We don't care about where you worked before or where you went to school. We care about the quality of your work, your ability to learn fast, being a great colleague, and your desire to have your efforts really impact lives.
The RoleWe're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join a small, experienced engineering team. This is a hands-on IC role. Your typical week will include writing code (and tests), reviewing others' code and helping them make it better, improving our review processes and tooling, and building the APIs and business logic that power our telehealth platform.
We use Django and Django REST Framework to provide foundational APIs and business logic, and React and Next.js on the client side. You'll primarily work on the backend, but we're looking for engineers who are comfortable working across the full stack as the lines between frontend and backend continue to blur; especially as AI coding tools make it increasingly practical to contribute outside your core specialty.
AI powered developer workflows mean there's a lot of code to review. We need engineers who can help out; not just by reviewing more code, but by raising the quality bar so there's less to catch, and by improving the processes and tooling we use to review. You'll work with significant autonomy while collaborating closely with a tight-knit team that includes our Principal Engineer, Chief Architect, Senior Engineering Manager, and Technical Project Manager.
What we're looking for
• 5+ years building and running production web applications. You've shipped real things to real users and kept them running.
• Strong Python experience, preferably with 3.8+. Django and Django REST Framework experience is strongly preferred, but deep experience with similar frameworks counts.
• Comfort working across the stack. You're backend-first, but you're not the kind of engineer who stops at the API boundary. Familiarity with JavaScript, React, or Next.js is a plus; willingness to work in them is a requirement.
• AI fluency. You have used AI tools, and have opinions about when they work and why they don't. You actively use, or are eager to adopt, AI coding tools in your workflow. You can review AI-generated code critically and know that "it works" isn't the same as "it's correct." We've done the work to set up HIPAA-compliant AI coding workflows with tools like Claude Code and VS Code with Anthropic and OpenAI integrations, and we want engineers who will make the most of them.
• Strong code review instincts. You write clear, constructive feedback. You catch real problems without nitpicking style. You understand that code review is as much about raising the team's standards as it is about catching bugs.
• Clear communication. You're able to work compassionately and effectively via Slack and video with teammates of diverse backgrounds and varying experience levels. You know when to ask for help.
• Comfort with healthcare subject matter. Our platform deals directly with sexual health, HIV prevention, and STI care. You should be comfortable with frank medical discussions and motivated by the impact this work has on patients, especially those in underserved populations.
• Mission alignment. We're a small team doing work that matters. We're looking for people who honestly want to help end HIV and are passionate about healthcare.
Bonus points
• Experience working with PHI in a HIPAA-compliant environment
• Experience with Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems or healthcare integrations (HL7, FHIR)
• A solid understanding of automated testing, you believe a feature isn't done until the tests are written
• You've worked on telehealth platforms or patient-facing healthcare applications
How We Work
